Deer in BC

CBC.ca | On The Island

Yesterday's clip starts at 18:40 mark: When it comes to the future of deer in the CRD opinions run strong and contrary, especially when it comes to discussing a possible cull. Some think the thousands of does and bucks are a nuisance wandering into city centres and destroying crops on Saanich farms. And others think they are living animals that deserve our care and protection. On Wednesday there will be a public meeting on this contentious issue. John Ranns is the chair of the Planning, Transportation & Protective Services Committe for CRD.

On today's show at 11 am EST: "The politics of ungulates. Greater Victoria's deer dilemma is attracting national attention. We'll hear from the leader of a federal political party who's in town trying to prevent a cull."

Talks, talks, and more talks!

Liz will be at U of T tonight, speaking about the Ontario Vet College at the University of Guelph.

Medical Sciences Building
Southeast end of One Hart House Circle (near College / University)

7 pm

Tomorrow, she will be speaking at York University on the same issue.

And next week, Liz will be joining a group of residents in BC in an effort to save the deer in Victoria.
In and around Victoria and southern Vancouver Island, a few politically influential residents are demanding that local politicians condemn deer – in the hundreds – to death. Some of the residents want the deer slaughtered simply because they’re nibbling rose bushes. Other reasons used to rationalize the killing, all fail under scrutiny. Every one.
